Photography Question

Jodie Potter

channel Mixer

Could anyone tell me if Photoshop Elements 4.0 has the Channel Mixer function. I am wanting to try using it to make black & white photographs.
Thanks!

If it doesn't (I use PSE 3, don't have 4), it can be added on by going to earthboundlight.com. The site offers add-ins like the channel mixer and curves adjustment layers for Elements users. I use his stuff on PSE 3 and it works like a charm.

I wish I knew your secret Paul. I have it on PSE 2.0 and it's great but after I use it I can't do things like sharpen or dodge and burn. The dodge and burn bring the color back.

Also check out Richard Lynch's "Hidden Power" series of books written just for Elements 2 through 4. I have PSE2 and found the appropriate book, used. (Dunno if it is still in print currently.) It came with a CD full of his Powertools for installation into PSE2, including Channel Mixer. Check out his website, hiddenelements.com, for more info as well. (He's also a BP instructor now.)
All this sounds like a plug for him, but honestly, I've just enjoyed exploring the book and the tools on the CD.

Darren, are you using Bob Johnson's Earthbound Light Effects? If you are are, you cant apply filters to the adjustment layer. The effect is restricted to edits to the layer mask only. To sharpen, you have to select the background original. Always make sure it's a copy of your original!
For dodging and burning, try this..
You are going to create 2 new effects layers. Choose the curves effect, and don't make any adjustments. Hit OK and name this layer Burn. Set the blend mode to Multiply. Your image should darken up considerably. Now fill the layer mask with black to hide the effect. Repeat the process with a second Curves layer, except name this one Dodge and set the blend mode to screen. Again, fill the layer mask with black to hide the lightening effect.
Now pick a soft brush, set your foreground color to white and the opacity to about 10%-20% (a 50% gray color works well also, for a more subtle effect). Just select the appropriate layer mask and start painting, varying your brush size and opacity, to lighten or darken selective areas of your image. It works really well and gives you tons more control than the Dodge and Burn tool. Plus it's the ultimate in Undo, if you don't like it, just paint over it with black again.

If you are looking for a Channel Mixer for Elements 4 (or 5), there is one in my free tool sets for Elements, as well as in my books. You can download that from my website:

http://hiddenelements.com

I also have other tools for custom B&W conversion.

Thanks for the mention here Christopher!
