How to dye an already dyed muslin

I purchased a 10 x 12 muslin a while ago and never use it because I can't stand the colors (the joy of buying online). Then it dawned on me that maybe I can dye it and tone it down. It is mottled and like a beige to burnt orange color (it looked more brown online). What I want is to make it less red/orange and more of a warm, deep brown.

Anyone with experience can you PLEASE give me any advice you'd have with this! I was thinking possibly trying RIT dye, but would it take the color evenly given the size of the muslin and my small-ish capacity washer?

Any advice is greatly appreciated...I would love to salvage this background if possible!

Thank you!

Hi Kristin try using spray paint in the colors you want. It comes out with the mottled effect but is a whole lot easier. I have a couple of them in my gallery.
