Photography Question

Question for portrait photographers

Well I'm hunting around for tips to help deal with mouth positions and facial expressions to make sure I have some variety in my photoshoots.

I've gathered one that has worked well...when it's bright out you can have the model close their eyes for a while and then count for them to have them open their eyes naturally for just a second or so to eliminate squinting or at least keep it down.

Now I'm looking for a way to get a natural mouth position since I believe most people will have their mouths slightly open naturally but they think about their mouth and close it when they're in front of a camera. I'm looking for a tip or trick to get them to open their mouth but not look like they have their jaw hanging open or like they're pulling their lips apart.

Any other facial expression tips would be awesome!

Thanks!
Andrew

I always have them say YES.... you get a natural smile and they have a great time saying it. I kinda always say YES after a great shot, full of enthsusiasm and it has become a habit. I found out it is a great way to get a natural smile.
That's my tip!

Here's one: Make sure they're not eating. :>) (This comes in very handy at things like weddings).

Here's some of what I'm talking about... www.myspace.com/chazlynnmusic

The picture are all mine there and they have been compressed by the person who put the site together but it will give you an idea. Most of these are serious style shots but in some her mouth was closed when I would have rather had it open just a touch but when I ask her to open just a touch it's always way too much and looks like her jaw is hanging open. If you look at a bunch of lipstick ad shots you will see what I'm talking about. Their lips are mostly together, but you can still see their teeth through their lips.

Thanks!
