Photography Question

Lens Choice...?

In another 3 or 4 weeks, I will be purchsing a new lens for my Canon XT. I have narrowed it down to two lenses. Either the Tamron 28-75mm XR DI LD ($400.00), or the Canon 28-123 USM IS at ($400.00). I do enjoy taking indoor sports photos, landscapes, along with portraits, still learning! I have read many absoulute possitive comments about the Tamron, and how it takes crisp and clear photos, and I do like the f/2.8 aprature fact for indoor shots, which I don't do very often. One person told me that 28mm in not wide enough for land or seascape shots, and another told me he is pleased at 28mm for landscape photos. I have also read possitive comments about the Canon 28-135mm lens. However, it seems to me that I have read more possitive feedback about the Tamron lens. If anyone out there use both lenses or have had experience using them both, please tell me what you think. The thing most important to me is the quality...I want clear, crisp, and sharp photos with good color. I would appreciate any advise you can give me.
Thank you very much... :-)

  Don't buy either of them!!!

If I'm not incorrect, th3 XT is a digital SLR and has the same 1.6 lens factor as my Canon 30D. That means you must multiply 28 X 1.6 + ~47 mm - the resultant focal length with either of these lenses. You'll be shooting with the equivalent of an "Normal" lens, without any wide-angle capability.

I just bought the Canon 17-75 mm IS zoom. Not really happy with the speed by the range is usable because I have both the Tamrom 20-200 and 200-400 mm zooms. So, I have and effective range from 28 to 630 mm.

Think twice!

Lani: I assume you will be buying the kit with the 18-55mm zoom.

That will give you a wide angle to short telephoto lens.

I think you will want a longer telephoto zoom such as a 55-200mm OR an even longer 70-300mm or similar.

Canon brand lenses are great but Tamron and Sigma are more affordable.

A 28-75mm or 28-135mm zoom is not the ideal choice with the XT - neither provides much of a wide angle effect with the XT. (They're fine for 35mm film cameras, though.)

If you do not plan to get the 18-55mm zoom, think about one of the 18-200mm zooms. You can find lots of lenses and prices at www.bhphotovideo.com
