March winner repeats as April finalist.....how?

Congrats to all the great finalists! Question to judges or anyone...I was curious as to how a photo that won first place in March (Details & Macro) is showing up as a finalist this month? It appears to be the same exact photo, does this happen often? -Virginia

Your right, but it changed his image from a second place to a finalist in the march contest. You do see that and there really is nothing in the rules stating you can not post the same image in different months. I guess they want first or grand prize.

That's A Risky Venture When You Already Have A 1st Place Win, If He Doesnt Get Another 1st Place Win Or Better (GP) His Badge Will Change To Reflect A Lower Value Win Or Finalist Only, He Should Have Re Uploaded A Copy Of That Image Instead Of Resubmitting The One In His Gallery. He Is Well Within The Contest Rules Though As Vicki Said.
Maybe He Is A Gambling Man Or Just Didn't Realize What Would Occur..

Yes congratulations to all finalists- I've another question though - in the B/W category there is a colour pic with a blue sky and the moon in it - am I missing something here??

  Hi Everyone-
At this time, you are correct, there is not a rule against resubmitting images in a different month. However, as the contest grows we are currently reconsidering that rule. I will let you know what we determine.

Thanks

I have only been a BP member for a few months but have resubmitted a couple of pictures after using a tool in PS or changing the crop in order to improve the image. For me, resubmitting is about developing my skills so I would be disappointed to see it end.

My original question was why someone is allowed to resubmit a photo that had won first place the previous month. The photo in question won in March and then placed as a finalist in April. I was curious how this happened and why the photographer would resubmit after winning first place, perhaps resubmitted by mistake.

I think resubmitting a good image that's been passed over (possibly due to the huge number of entries) is a good idea. However, resubmitting a photo that has won, or even just been a finalist....well, that is just ridiculous.

Resubmitting a finalist is a good way not to be shut out if you do at least one each month :o) LOL.

I like Jane's point about resubmitting improved images. As you learn, sometimes you can improve on a previously submitted photo...I think that improvement deserves a second look. Maybe the improved area was the one thing that kept it from the finalist circle in the first place.

Some of the members don't understand my original question....My question was regarding resubmitting a photo that had ALREADY won first place in March for details and macro category. The same photo placed as a finalist for April. I don't think a photo that has a winning status should be allowed to be resubmitted. Just my view!

I understood your original point but these threads tend to go off on a tangent! Maybe the first place winner is re-submitting going for the grand prize, as 2nd place winners and finalists also re-submit hoping to improve their placing. There are no rules saying you can't, and if they made a new one where would you draw the line? No finalists and up resubmitting? Or no resubmitting at all? Heather wasn't clear in her reply what they are considering. I don't know how the judging works, but if it is different judges from month to month it might explain why people feel it is a good idea to re-submit previously selected photos.

Maybe, Virginia, the problem is that the contest results only come out at the end of the next month. So I can imagine two scenarios: (1) The results from last month still aren't in and won't be until late in the current month; the person thinks he/she didn't have a chance anyway in the chosen category, so resubmits in another category for the current month, not knowing yet that the image has won, or (2) the person plain forgot they'd entered the image last month, and last month's results still aren't in.

Then again, there's (3): the person is beyond competitive.

I don't see how BP can enforce a blanket no resubmit rule because, like some of you, I've tweaked non-finalists with good results. Since there were changes, it's not really the same picture. And, as others have pointed out, the resubmit can be a good learning experience.

A rule that no medaled image can be resubmitted makes sense to me, but I wonder if it's worth the effort to enforce it. Are there really that many medaled resubmits?

It very well could be that the winner submitted his/her photo into the next months contest even before knowing that he/she received a win. Since the winners are announced around the 25th of the month, he/she could have submitted an entry prior to the 25th.

I completely agree.

And even if they submitted before they found out they won, that doesnt make sense either. Even if I think there's no way I'll win with a certain picture, I still wait to see if it did or did not win before I resubmit!!

I think it should definitely be a rule that you may not re-enter a winning photo EVER EVAH! HELLO, you WON already, MOVE ON. I think it's cheap, and quite frankly, tacky. The people that do this are, quite frankly, ONLY IN IT FOR THE PRIZES, and not to develop and grow and learn as a photographer.

Don't hate me because I'm beautiful,
Andrew

Maybe people would quit doing that if they knew they'd lose that free year extension on their gallery???

LOL @ Kay, "the person is beyond competitive!"

Once upon a time I felt that any particular photo should only be allowed to enter once...period. But over time I decided that if one of my photos is good enough to win, I want it to compete against the best. I don't want to win by default.

And if I never see another finalist, that's fine too. Happy Shooting. :-)

Though I have submitted the following query elsewhere, I repeat it here as it fits well with what we have been exploring here:
I'm still not clear about the time-line of the contest; for example, the theme for July is Summer Fun which by now (1st July 11.57 GMT) has about 11 entries but including a declared finalist!! How come that few hours into the contest and a finalist has already been selected?

The photo in the above question was most likely a finalist in recent months and resubmitted for July's theme hoping to place as a winner this time around. My original question was regarding a resubmitted photo that was already a "first place winner", why they would want to resubmit is puzzling to me.

Virginia's right, MH--The answer can be found by reading that photo's discussion---(I assume the one of the kid in the water?) It was originally posted to BP back in July 2005, and became a July 2005 Finalist eventually. (The first 'congratulations on your Finalist' message posted to that photo is from Aug. 20, 2005.) So, it is in fact a prior Finalist, being resubmitted, not a photo already selected as Finalist for the July 2006 contest.

Why re-submit when you've already won or finalized?

Why not even the field and let some of the other 20,000+ entries each month get at chance at one of the finalists or wins.
It's getting tougher as BP is growing and remember,...we're all getting better.

Once a photo is finalized and/or wins a in a category,...call it an accomplishment and wear the badge proudly while working on that next masterpiece.
