How to use Nikon 1.8D 50mm lens on NIkon D70

This might be a really silly question, but I have no other choice. I recently bought a Nikon 1.8D 50mm lens for my Nikon D70 - I have not been able to figure out how to change the aperture f/1.8-22. I think it is at f/22 now - but if I try to change it to something lower, it shows a Fee error or something and I am not able to take a pic. Please help me.

Thanks,
Radha

  Radha,
As you know, lenses like the 50/1.8D that have actual aperture rings, you must set THE LENS to the smallest f-stop setting. Then lock it in place, so it doesn't move accidentally. Then you control the f-stop using the finger WHEEL on the D70 - sorry, I can't remember offhand if it is the finger wheel in front, or the thumb wheel in back.
If you've already done this, then there may be a problem with the electrical contacts matching up. Try nudging the lens one way or the other. Perhaps, take the lens off the camera, and then remount it again.
I've had this same problem in the past, and don't remember what I did to resolve it, but whatever it was, the problem was resolved.
If you cannot resolve the issue, call Nikon's Tech Support (if you're in the USA) @ 800-645-6687 (800-NIKONUS).

Thanks for your reply, Michael. I called up Nikon to see what they had to say and they said that you cannot turn the aperture ring with a D70. I need to change the aperture manually using the Nikon software on the camera. So, my problem has been resolved.

Thanks for your help anyways,
Radha
