  Hi Craig Ė

I know you were merely ranting and probably are not looking for a critique; so you can disregard this if you wish. You know what they say about unsolicited advice: itís worth what you pay Ė ZIP. (lol)

I took a look at your gallery and you have some nice ideas. As one learner to another; many of your images are well designed and interesting subjects; however, the color is sometimes a little washed out. Have you considered how time of day impacts overall image quality? I have found that shooting early in the morning or late in the afternoon really makes a difference to the overall quality of light and color in my images. I particularly notice this when I am attempting to make scenic, flower and bird images. It might be worth experimenting with image making at different times of day depending upon where you live and what type of subject you select. Anyway, thatís my two cents worth!

Irene

A really well composed, perfectly focused, sharp, well saturated, unique image that knocks the socks off one or more judges.

Remember, Craig, judging is subjective. What one person likes, another doesn't. I mean how many beautiful women weren't chosen as Miss America - and they had to put some real time and, perhaps, money into their candidacy. Oh, yes, sponsors may have provided the money.

There are up to 20,000 entries each month - with only about 21 winners. I admit the odds are better than those associated with the Powerball lottery, but . . .

Regards,
John

Instead of getting frustrated, take the time to examine those entries in the area's you like to shoot. Look back over several months, then make a plan to emulate some of the work you admire. You'll find yourself more satisfied and perhaps have a Finalist or even better! Good Luck!

I entered the contest for the first time this month, so I haven't been through an entire cycle. Have the first and second place winners been announced? If so, who are they? If not, how does Craig know he won't be one of them? Thanks.

Welcome aboard, Marcia! For each month's contest, a pool of Finalists is selected from all entries. (March Finalists were just announced this week.) From that pool, all the 2nd, 1st and Grand prize images are selected. (They have not yet been announced, as of this message.) Hope that helps!
