Photography Question

Zoom lens with extender

I am considering buying the Sigma 50-500mm lens for my canon 20D...will this lens work with my canon 2x extender? Will the auto focus work?
Are there any comments on this lens?
Thanks Joan

  Joan,
This lens should work with your Canon extender.

Of course, Sigma will say that you should use a Sigma extender with their lens, and Canon will say that you should use a Canon lens with their extender. But it should work anyway.

Auto focus won't work, though. Both Sigma and Canon state that AF will only work through a 2x extender if the lens has a max aperture of f/2.8. I think your lens has a max aperture of f/4.0, so you'll have to use manual focus.

I've never tried using an f/4.0 lens on an extender, so I don't know if it is a case where AF won't work "well", or it won't work "consistently" or it just won't work at all.

You should be able to find reviews on this lens at www.fredmiranda.com

  Joan,
I'm revising my previous statement. This lens might not work with the Canon extender. I forgot that Canon's 2x extender has an element that protrudes into the rear of the lens a bit. Sigma's extender doesn't do this (I have the Sigma extender).

This might take a little more research to make sure it will work.

If you check the reviews of this lens at fred miranda's site, someone may have mentioned this issue there.

  Joan,

I have had the lense for over a year now and really like it. It is heavy and I thought at first it would be difficult to carry through the woods. I like nature photography. It really is no worse than all the crap I carry when I go deer hunting. You will need at the very least a monopod to help steady the lense. I have had a little success with hand holding; probably one out of every five shots is good. The only trouble I have had is with it is the creep lock. It jammed and broke on me and had to send it off for repair. I can't help you with the 2x extender, haven't tried it yet. I don't think I will need an extender due to the fact I bought the lense when I still had my film camera and now I shoot the D70S. Hope this helps.

Todd
