Photography Question

Contessa D. Wolverton

My images aren't sharp with my Canon 10D

I have noticed that even when I have really good lighting and subject is in focus it is not very sharp. On my computer when it tells me about the stats of the picture it says- Sharpness: Normal. I am using a Canon 10D. Does this mean somewhere on my camera I can boost the sharpness up? I have read all over in my manual and can't find anything. Someone help, please. I can always use unsharp in CS2 but it doesn't always give me desirable results. Thanks, Contessa

are you using full auto mode? if so, I believe there is something in the menue for contrast, saturation and sharpness...but im not sure!
What lens are you using? that is probably your reason.. plus settings, if you are shooting something that is too far away to be focused properly for the Aperture your using, you will get "soft" pictures... and finally there is camera shake, if you are shooting at a slower shutter speed than you should be, you wil get a blurry shot. With a DSLR, there are allot of variables as to why you might not be getting the sharpest shots. Learn to use the manual modes AV, TV, and full manual, it will really boost your photography!

Thanks, I am starting to use manual mode. I have the 28-80mm canon lens. I shoot mainly portraits, so I don't think I am trying to shoot too far away. I am not very proficient in manual so this is probably the reason. I wonder how I can find out how to change the settings. Even when I was shooting in manual the stats said sat, sharpness, contrast, and tone were all at normal. Thanks for all your help.

do a google search for the instruction manual for your camera... sometimes tey have them online that you can down load in PDF format for free... OR... go to http://photography-on-the.net/forum/ and become a member its free like here and its all canon camera users... tons of info and if you cant find it, its probably not avalable. I know a few people over there are using the 10D so I bet theyd answere your question pretty quickly.

See page 56 of the manual. The camera's "0" default for parameters (Contrast, Sharpness, Saturation, Color-tone) applies very little processing to the images. If you want sharper JPEGs straight out of the camera, set the Sharpness parameter to +1 or +2.

Thank You Jon! I guess I didn't look hard enough in my manual before. I think that will really help me. I remember reading an article before on having to do that with the 10D. -Contessa

Hi Contessa, I have a smaller Canon digital camera the Rebel 300D and also had problems with sharpness. I adjusted the parameters for Sharpness all the way and increased the Saturation all the way and adjusted Contrast just a little. It did really seem to help the look of my images. I hope you were able to adjust your camera and that it has helped.
