For what it's worth Mandy, I'd call the Dept. of Business Administration at ASU and get a list of their accounting profs. Odds are they're either in private practice or could give you a few names of some accountants who are. Specify whether you want a CPA or not. (They charge more, but often are more familiar with the IRS code.)

Just for the record: A CPA is basically just an accountant who has passed an expensive test and agreed to abide by the CPA code of ethics. You could get the same quality without the CPA title...and not have to pay the higher price. In fact, the best accountants that I have known are not CPAs.

For clarification, I am not saying anything bad about CPAs...just that not all good accountants have those letters placed at the end of their names. :)

(GRRRRRR....I hit the submit too soon)
Non-CPAs can be VERY familiar with IRS code also. There is nothing about just being a CPA that really makes them more familiar with IRS law.

Spoken like a true accountant who hasn't been able to pass the CPA exam Sherry. While it's true that bookeepers may know more tax law than other bookeepers or ordinary accountants, by virtue of their intensive certification, CPAs (Certified Public Accountants) have a college background in both business administration and are certified in accounting procedures AND the tax code. Yeah, they're more expensive than an accountant or bookeeper, but with good reason actually. Accountants are usually degreed and studying for their CPA exam. Bookeepers do accounting.

Assuming that Mandy just needs someone to either help set up her books or to ask a set of generic questions to about her business, sure an accountant or bookeeper is fine. If for some reason she's gotten herself into a jam with the tax collector(s) then I recommend she either see a CPA or tax attorney.

And for some names, I still recommend she call ASU. seewhatimeanhuh?

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

Kerry, that's just because they don't hand out certificates for most humorous BP forum responders...If they did, you'd certainly be certified (I'm not sure about certifiable...lol)!! Thanks for lightening up the threads as only you can do! :)
