digital photos of artwork

I am shooting digital photos of my wife art work. Most odf her work is 18" X 24" up to 24" x 30". Is it a good idea to use a copy stand witha 24" x 32" base to shoot on to eliminate any skewing or distortion of the art works photo. I saw a Delta copy stand at B&H and thought it might be a good aid what are your thoughts on this? She also does jewerly and I thought it might also be useful to photograph the pieces. Thank You

No. I'd forget the copy stand. Try rigging some kind of frame, say between two light stands to hang the prints on. Make sure each piece is plumb, square and level to the camera and that the camera is also PSL to the subject. Light from 45 degrees to either side of your camera. Jewelery should ideally be photographed inside of either a light tent or light cone illuminated from the outside and properly scrimmed, gobo'd or rigged to control the light 100 %.

If any of this work is for reproduction in a publication or for commercial press, you should include a color card and a black and white gray scale strip in each shot that can be cropped out on printing.

Whaddya think?
Mark
