George - Take heart. It isn't the camera that makes the picture.

Once you make the decision to scan a picture for purposes of entry a web-based phot contest, you can edit all your pictures and there is no further advantage to using a digital camera.

In my view, as I'm almost ready to buy one, the real advantages lie in:

1. The LCD viewer that allows the photographer to see whether he got the picture he wanted [at least in the viewer. and

2. The ability to soot a lot of pictures at very little "shooting cost." however, the cost for printing is the same whether you're printing from a scanned print of a digital upload.

Keep trying. A great picture will ultimately be selected by judges. Maybe not at BP.com [because there are so many entries that it's too easy for the judges to become overwhelmed by sheer numbers,] but in a local competition, etc.

  George,
You only stated that you just started digital. You didn't specify if you were now scanning film shots or you now have a digital camera. Either way, if you purchased either, most manufacturers of either cameras or scanners, include in their software some form of editing program albeit however simplistic it may be.
You don't need to rush out and buy Photoshop, which is a pretty expensive outlay.
Personally, I use PhotoImpact Pro, which was under $100 and does many of the same things that PS does. Granted it may not contain as many extras or some of the more professional use features you would find in PS.
For the most part, unless you intend to manipulate your images with various filters and plug-ins, you really only need to be concerned with exposure, contrast, color correction and sharpness and possibly the ability to crop. That is pretty much the basics to digital image enhancement. If you have at least those four or five things under your control, you are well on your way to making even so-so shots outstanding. The bottom line is, most all picture editing software accomplishes those things and it won't have to put your new camera or scanner into hock to get it. Micrsoft also makes a couple of flavors of Picture It, thier version of digital editing software.
So unless you really feel you need to expand your creativity to the levels of Photo shop, with all it's filters and plug-ins, I wouldn't spend the money on it. It would be a waste to spend the money on PS, and use only the same tools that are found in most <$100 programs.
I do have Photoshop elements which was part of the software bundle with my Canon. Also, I just recently downloaded Adobes' 30 trial version of PS9. And to tell you the truth, I can't see where there is that big of a difference between the two. Perhaps I'm missing something here.
Bob

Good pictures equalling had to be done with photoshop is a popular misconception.
Maybe an urban corn field category.
