Depth of field in high end P&S. Looking at the new Canon Powershot S3 coming out in May. 6.0-72.0mm f/2.7-3.5 (35mm film equivalent: 36-432mm) Struggling with SLR or high end P&S (don't like the idea of having to carry around extra lenses and having to "edit" every picture on Photoshop...and from what I've read on this website that is exactly what I will have to do)...since these high end P&S don't have the small f-stops...what kind of depth of field can I expect? Their biggest drawbacks?? Once again, thank you.

You can expect very deep depth of field with the S3's 6-72mm lens, even at f/2.8. P&S cameras have many advantages: size, weight, convenience, etc. Biggest drawbacks of P&S cameras are greater noise at any given ISO level, greater depth of field, lack of wide angle, no hot shoe for accessory flash

Then maybe I should ask if I can get shallow depth of field!

Yes That Is A Good Question You Should Ask Cheryl:-)And No You Cannot Get The Great Boketh (Or Shallow DOF) Offered By A F 2.8 Or Wider Aperture Lens On A DSLR, As Far As Having To Edit Each An Every Image Your Option Would Be To Shoot In Jpeg Mode (With Either The P&S Or A DSLR) And Let The Camera Choose What To Do With Your Images That's Usually What Is Occurring In The P&S Camera's, They Do Take Nice Close Ups Of Flowers And Such Though..
