  Hi Jason,
I have the Dimage Z5 and it eats up the batteries fast as well but, what device these days doesnt? I Just buy my batteries in bulk.
As for the sport pictures try the fastest shutter speed the Z7 has. ( the Z5 fastest speed is 1/1000)
You need to be in shutter priority exposure mode (S) to adjust this. I recommend using a tripod as well. Just play around with it untill you find the correct setting for what you are looking for. The good thing about it is you can just delete the photos you dont want. Hope this helps. I'm still getting used to my Z5. Are you happy with the Z7?

The user manual for the Minolta DiMAGE 5 and 7 (and many other digital cameras) states: "AA-size Ni-MH batteries can also be used, and are recommended because of longer life."

Rechargeable Ni-MH (nickel metal hydride) batteries have much better performance in this application than alkalines, and are far less expensive in the long run. I like Energizer's 2500 mAh AA's, but there are several brands rated 2000 mAh and higher that are good. Buy at least 8 cells so that you always have 4 in the camera and 4 charged spares.
