Metering moving children outside How do you handle portraits of children when they are outdoors? Metering is very frustrating to me because the children are always on the move and the light is different from one picture to the next so I'm not getting good pictures. How do you handle this, are you just relying on your camera's meter? Also, are you using a flash when you're outdoors and are you pointing it straight at the subject? I would like that extra "pop" but it just seems too bright. I have a Metz. Thanks,

Well if you're "pop" is too bright just knock it down a 1/2 a stop or a stop. Now for metering the children you could use an incident meter and measure the light that is falling on them. Let's say you're out in your backyard with sunlight...you incident meter the sunlight and the exposure will be the same as long as their in the light. So you could go out and meter the sunlight, remember it, then meter a shaded area and remember it, and just adjust your camera according to your meter. If you don't have one, I personally would suggest getting one, as they are very useful and accurate.

Thanks Justin. I have a meter I just need to get more practice with it. Maybe that's my issue.
