Photography Question

Robin Briggs

How do I use AF in continuous mode?

I have a Nikon D70, had it for over a year. I have a toddler, and it seems like I would get some better pictures of her running around if I learned how to use continuous autofocus.

However, after reading the manual several times and trying to play with it, I just can't seem to get how to do it. Do I aim at my girl first and then hold the release down halfway and follow her around?

Help please!

Yes, you are exactly right in how to use Continuous AF.
I'm a Nikon shooter, but have never used a D70. I'm just wondering if your camera doesn't have (and forgive my senior moment, but I can't recall its official name) a focusing sensor that senses the direction your child is moving, and then determines where she'll be in some future finite time, and then focuses on that spot. This system, whatever it's called, is great for any moving subject, and many cameras today have some version of it. I would think the D70 is so equipped.

  Hello Robin;

Take it from me; and I will be blunt as a owner of the D-70..The Continuous AF in the D-70 is just plain crap!
In theory it uses "predictive Tracking" so it should know if the subject is moving toward or away..Fine in theory, in reality it does not work too well.

Now; to be more constructive; there are a couple things to do in capturing a moving toddler.

1) Trap focus: Knowing where the subject will be and pre-focusing.

2) "Closest area focus" ..the D-70 will lock only the closest subject.

The D-70 is a pretty fast camera, so it has little problem locking on and shooting in a split second.
Use Aperture priority, close down a little to get a tad more depth of field and you should have no problems.

The D-70 is a great camera, but the Continuous AF has always been a complaint of mine and many others.

All the Best

Pete

  Pete,

Thanks so much for enlightening me! At least I don't feel like I'm a complete idiot. Not sure how well I can predict where my daughter will go, but I like the suggestion about Closest Subject. I'll try it out.

Thanks!
Robin

hows about AF, and be sure that all your AF points are on? sometimes I try to leave just the center AF point on but then you need to be dead on the target to get good focus.. if you leave all the focus points on the camera has a better time tracking the subject, unless she runs to close to another object thats about the same distance to you that she is, or closer. And what settings does the D70 have for AF.. does it have "servo"?
