Photography Question

Margie Hurwich

Selling File

I have been approached by someone wanting to use one of my photos in some literature for a woman's retreat. As well, the same image would be used in a PowerPoint presentation. Thus, I need to send the file to the person inquiring. I would be putting a copyright signature in the bottom corner so it can't be reproduced, but how much should I charge for this type of service?

Margie, I asked the same question yesterday and, as yet, have received no replies. See the question "Pricing for using an image."

This must be a tough question. I have been thinking about the inquiry I received for "using" one of my images. I'm now inclined to offer the image use for no cost, but I will request an agreement from the using party on the limitation of use.

I had done a search...but apparently not an extensive one as I hadn't seen your questions. Thanks for getting to me about this. Will you write up the agreement? I wouldn't even know where to begin to write one up.

Here's one that you could modify to suit your needs...

A moderate fee wouldn't be inappropriate, not too much for the client's budget, but enough to show that you're serious about your work. Remember, you can always negotiate...

For some reason $35 seems to be the number that sticks in my head since this will be reproduced many times. Is this a going amount?

A few months ago, I had a similar case from a would-be entreprenur who was requesting a use of an image.
I received no responses from this group.

So what did you end up charging? Did you ever find out how many copies of your shot they used?

$35.00 seems more than fair. The photo credit is important... gotta get your name out there.

Quite honestly Margie and John, I've answered the nearly identical question here so many times that I've lost count. So, look for threads here on pricing photos and I'll lay odds you'll come across at least a few of my replies. I posted links to the APA website (advertising photographers of America) and at one point, a direct link to their pricing surveys. Which has the information you're looking for. You may not like what you see there, but it's real world, professional fees. I'll probably get some flack for saying this (again) but if you're going to run with the big dogs, you have to get off the porch. And, if you're going to do professional grade work or get into professional types of situations, charge accordingly. If you don't, it makes you look like an amateur. If you don't KNOW what to charge, instead of asking here, join a professional association, go to meetings, talk to members, look at surveys and READ books on business practices for professional photographers. Then, when the issue comes up again, you guys will answer it and I'll be pleased to know that perhaps, just maybe...I started a trend.

As for the proposed $35 bucks, you have GOT to be kidding. $35 dollars for a publicity brochure used in a commercial venture? I gotta ask: At that fee, why bother charging at all. Why not just give your work away for free in exchange for a byline?

Take it light gang.
Mark

Mark, I couldn't agree more. However, I am a beginner. I just started taking photos in July. I was approached, which was a first for me. I did try searching, but I apparently was searching on the wrong things. I've read numerous threads on what to sell photos...but not the file. I was clueless. I know I'm not a big dog, and can guarantee I don't claim to be one. I'm just a puppy just learning to run with my big goofy feet! LOL!

I had someone want one of my images for a college report and I sent it to her to use.

She never sent a thank you but I guess if it helps her with her college work than I can give her the image. :)

Someone had told me they gave their shot away since it was for a not-for-profit organization. The woman that contacted me was from a church. Not sure what denomination, but I can't assume they have a ton of money either.

Magie I guess I look at this way. If it helps somebody and they not making money on it than it is ok.

I sent several into a Wyoming TV news station today and the man called me and said he was going to use one of them on the TV on Monday night news.

They feature a photo by a Wyoming photographer each evening on the late news. I am not making money on that either but it will shown across the state.

I have given away one's and two's of 4x6's. It wasn't just worth asking for a few dollars for them. If I am a professional, I would have done it differently...
A year ago or so, a lady from a church asked for several images to use on their web site for the purpose of promoting different activities (photography as one) for young people. I let her use images for free.

Mergie, on the marketing material I mentioned above, it may be or may not be another scam, but I have an open end agreement depending on the outcome of this startup company. I may never see the $'s with this type of agreement. Be aware that there have been quite a few scam deals some of us faced last few months.

Thanks Nobi. I've read up on many of the scams and was very leary when I was approached. She has just asked how much I would charge, but nothing was mentioned yet as to how she would pay.

I usually just give it to them. However, I'm not all that interested in selling my stuff, so I guess I'd be coming from a different perspective than most of you. I just do it for fun and so am happy to give people stuff to use in exchange for a byline.

Out of curiosity, for those of you who give away photos for bylines, why do you do that? What do you gain from the byline? Do you promote a commercial website in the byline where you can benefit from sales or do you get a kick out of seeing your name with your photo? I cant imagine having your name alone would really benefit you unless you are getting published a lot in high quality publications. I am not trying to say what should be done. I was just curious about the motivation.
