About the halogen lights at hardware store
My son told me that halogen lamps were to hot and took alot of electricity. Just for still life and portrait pictures. I was thinking of making my own soft box and adding lights and covering with some sort of light covers. Cheezy? Cheap? I also would like to know if any of the above would work. Are there such things as strobe lights other than the truly expensive ones that a photographer would normally use?

First of all with hot lights you have to be aware of the potential fire danger when adding modifiers (ie. homemade soft boxes). Companies to make modifiers designed specifically for that application because of the heat concerns. You can use standard strobes with umbrellas and softboxes. The problem is they are not generally powerful enough for large modifiers and they don't have modeling lights. My advice is to keep your eye on ebay and anywhere that might sell used equipment. You can pick up good monolights this way at relatively low cost.
