Info on Studio strobe package

Im condersidering buying a studio strobe package and I would love to hear from some of you on what you would recommend. I do want the highest quality for the value. I have been looking at the Alien Bees (the busy bee package) and also interested in a White lighting strobe package. What would be the best value and quality from around $800.00 to $1600.00 range? Thanks for any help you could give. Jamie.

Greetings Jamie: I think before you can really get a useful answer to that particular question, that you should tell us what you plan to use these lights for and how often. Like are you going into business or just taking an occasional portrait. Are you shooting products or large items? How much room you've got to work in and what do you plan to use them for in the future? I think these are all valuable considerations when buying any kind of equipment, especially photographic.

And...my advice to new(er) photogs. just getting into the biz is to buy monolights with a high watt second output and UV coated flash tubes. I tell people to avoid packages unless they can really afford a high end one. Why? It's an investment in your work. You can do a lot with a 1500 or 2000 w/s monolight in a softbox with a stand and other accessories including radio slave and reflectors, and there goes your $800 bucks. (My own preference is Bowens monolights)

Remember that if you buy lower end equipment now, you'll probably outgrow it professionally in the not too distant future. And when you need to replace it, chances are you won't recover the fair market value you paid for it so you'll end up spending more than you would have if you started with higher end equipment on a smaller scale. Seewhatimean? Then instead of spending $1600 on lighting, you can take say 7-800 bucks and spend it on advertising. :>)

BTW, B&H in New York sells Bowens monolight packages. http://www.bhphotovideo.com. For your $1600, you'd probably get two excellent lights, some light modifiers like umbrellas and a softbox (I'd recommend Chimera for that), couple of stands, and a soft case to carry the whole deal in.

Take it errr...light.
Mark
