Photography Question

Jay A. Grantham

Nikonian Handshake?

Well, so far I can't seem to get anyone around me excited about this.. but I've ordered my first DSLR: Nikon D70s, 35-70 2.8, SB-800, 1Gig card. I put away my pennies for about 6 months to do it and I'm a bit excited about it.

So is there a handshake I need to know about?

I guess I'm not getting it. Why do you need congratulations for purchasing a camera?

As I've said in many threads, a camera doesn't make a picture. The photographer does. You're boast now is that you're a Nikon owner, not a better photographer.

When you make some images with your new cmaera, post 'em and ask for comments. Let's see how you're doing.

I think it is great you have a new camera. John is right the photographer makes the picture and not the camera. But it is always fun to get something new and I understand the excitement as a lot of people will. Enjoy and post the new images when you get them!

Wow John, put away the soapbox. I didn't say anything about being a better photographer, being able to take better pictures or anything like that.

I simply am excited about finally purchasing a new camera after saving for so long.

Thanks for the links Donna.

And thanks for all the emails on the handshake *winks*

"As I've said in many threads, a camera doesn't make a picture. The photographer does."

Quite true. And far from me to get excited about a DSLR purchase, but...

"You're boast now is that you're a Nikon owner, not a better photographer."

Why does it have to be either/or? I've found it quite possible to enjoy both ownership of nice cameras (and their technical aspects), and also the pursuit of better pictures. It's a simple conscious habit to formulate, takes a few milliseconds to execute.

I'm thinking the real reason for the criticism may be that you purchased a despised Nikon.

  Quite possible, Will.

I can't hardly say I prefer Nikon over Canon, never have spent time with either one.

I do prefer:

Peter Pan Peanut Butter
Coca-Cola
Ford
Levi Jeans
Calloway Woods
Trackball
iPod

Saved from an old post years ago on a now-defunct board:

Canon owners criticize Nikon cameras

Minolta owners criticize Nikon owners

Nikon owners criticize each other's cameras

Leica owners criticize each other.

  ewwwww! coca-cola! haha

I know that some people say that a "-this-type-of-person's" handshake is

(grasps hand) "Hi! I'm better than you!" Maybe that's what you're looking for? lol jk!

Congrats!

Congratulations on your new D70, Jay!!! You'll LOVE it!

Oh sure, the person behind the camera has to know what they're doing to get a good pic, but I don't care what anyone says you can't get a good pic with an inferior camera regardless of brand!

In digital I started with the Olympus Z490. I upgraded to the Nikon 5700. I wasn't happy with my images until I got the D70. There is a BIG difference, and my images prior to the D70 attest to this statement especially where the Oly was concerned. I couldn't get a decent shot with that camera if my life depended on it.

You'll do well with the D70, Jay!

  Thanks again..

Wouldn't you know it, I got the lens yesterday, sans user manual (bought used) and I have to wait a few more days for the body/flash.

I've been searching high and low for the manual online.. no luck yet.

I guess I had an idea that the lens would be more advanced than the ones on my "old Minolta".. but wow.. I'm intimidated already.

Here ya go my friend. Just copy & paste.
While I agree that your new purchase won't make you a great photographer, I'm sure it will inspire you to get better..and THAT inspiration WILL make you better.
