From Manual SLR to … I am looking to get started. I have used a manual SLR in the past (10 years ago), but I would not say that I knew what I was doing. Someone from work is offering to sell me a Minolta XG-M, with Vivitar flash, hard case, and 5 lenses - 50 mm std., 28 mm wide-angle, 28-105 zoom, 90 mm macro, and 135 mm telephoto, for $600 Canadian (approx. $400 U.S.). It sounds like a good deal, the equipment is in very good shape (except for perhaps the wide-angle lens). However, I'm questioning whether to spend money on such an old system, or get a "newer" used system (autofocus perhaps). As a beginner, I want to get started, and am interested in all types of shots: architecture, landscapes, wildlife, people, sports and nature. One issue, is that I was told getting a 200 mm or more telephoto lens, might be difficult to use with this camera, is that so? And, though this setup gives me lots to play with, do I need all these lenses? I've just bought John Hedgecoe's "The Photographer's Handbook", any other good reading suggestions? Thanks.
