Photography Question

IAN J. TENNANT

Apple or PC

Hi Guys

I need your feedback, I have just installed CS2 on my old hp computer and the computer is just not cutting it.
I want to replace my system, which in your experience is the best route Apple or PC? The system will be used only for photo and video editing.
thanks for any feedback

Ian

I've heard that PS is made on Apple computers, then converted for PCs. So they work better on Apple. The next computer that I get, is most likely going to be an Apple too.

If you switch to Apple, you are going to have to purchase another copy of CS2.. so it might be more cost effective to stick with Windoze PC. If you get a new Apple.. it will be several months before Photoshop is ported to the new Intel Chip.. It will still work, but not nearly as fast as it will in the "near" future... unless you stick with the G5 Mac.

This is almost like asking which is better, Canon or Nikon? Canon users will say Canon, and Nikon users will be wrong. OOPS, I mean they'll say Nikon. ;-)

Traditionally, people in the graphic arts, graphic design, and video editing fields have mostly worked on Macs. For a long time, it was because Macs had more video processing power, and some of the programs you needed were only found on Macs.

Neither is really true today, although people in those fields still tend to stay pretty loyal to Macs. I think it's more out of tradition now.

I'm a PC guy, I got my first one 18 years ago. I'm too old to change.

  Thanks for the feedback guy's

Jay thanks for possibly saving me major $$$ (I was just blown away when I checked out the new apple) I will have to check with the adobe folks about costs associated with switching from a PC version to a Apple version.

Many thanks

Ian

If the folks at adobe turn out to be a problem, is there any particular PC set up you would reccomend ?

Even though I am some what of a silent member I am learning a great deal by reading the excellent posts on BP.

Once again thanks guys

Ian

I talked to the good folks at adobe, they will exchange the PC CS2 for the Apple CS2 for the cost of postage on current issues, if there has been a new upgrade they would replace for the cost of the upgrade (long live adobe)

Wow! Great for you Ian (must have been an old Macromedia person.. he he) I've heard of many folks in the past that couldn't do a swap. That's great news.

What are your applications? I looked into the "switch" and ultimately decided NO WAY. I have invested 1000's of dollars in other software that isn't photoshop and none of it comes in MAC. Virtual PC which is suupposed to play Windows software on Mac is said to suck. Some of my favorite applications for photoediting (RAWSHOOTER) aren't even released in MAC. Rawshooter allows me to not even use photoshop on 60% of my photos and makes batch processing very fast. My favorite filter sets (Virtual Photographer and others) aren't released in Mac versions.

Then I looked into the prices. An Imac was out of the question. They don't expand enough for me (2.5 gigs of RAM max) and I don't like components crammed into such small spaces because of heating issues. That left me with the Powermacs and cost wise there was no comparison (for me--I stress that to any mac users). I just purchased a media center computer for $3000. It is a dual core 3.2 gh with 2gigs of RAM. I have a TERABYTE of hardrive space. I got a 21in monitor that turns to portrait orientation for editing. I have a software bundle that includes all my favorites for writing and business (I'm first and foremost a writer) and also Powerpoint which will be a big boon in my line of work. I got all this with shipping and a 3 year warranty not a penny over $3000. Gateway gave me about $400 off and many free upgrades because I'm a preferred customer. Always call when you buy ANY system and talk to a salesperson. Act like you're going to "check around" and you'll often get a better deal.

Good luck. This is my experience. Loyal mac users will differ with me. But I've never had a virus and I've always been productive on a PC. No need to fix what ain't broke.
