Lens types

To Betterphoto,

I have just purchased a Nikon F80 camera with a Nikkor 28-80mm lens.

I am a beginner, but I'm interested indoing alot of human portrait shots.

I'm intending on purhasing a better quality lens for the camera ie. Nikon lens or other higher quality lens.

What length is the best for human portrait shots and which lens would you recommend for a medium priced and high priced lens.

Thanks
Osmond

The best lenses are prime lenses (non zoom). But when you are talking about shooting portraits you need different focal lengths because you will need something in a normal focal length for full and 3/4 lengt shots and longer focal lengths for head shots. I would say that something in the neighborhood of a 70-200mm lens would be just about ideal. If you can afford an f2.8 go for it if the f4 is the only thing in your budget you can still do nice work with that. I'm not a Nikon guy (or much of a 35mm guy for that matter) so I can't recommend a specific lens. As a rule the OEM lenses are best but I have heard good things about some of the third party lens manufacturers.
