Selling Prints Taken at a Rodeo

Hi everyone,
I've been to a couple rodeos and find that I really enjoy the challenge! of getting good action shots. It's been lots of fun. I'm going to my first Women's Professional Rodeo next week and want to try something different with the photos I will be taking.
My question revolves around selling prints of what I will be photographing. I have a website where the photos can be posted afterwards for the participants to purchase. But I've been told that to really do well I need to be set up at the rodeo to print off the shots for them to see and purchase on the spot. The spontaneos purchase.
Does anyone have experience in doing this and suggestions on how to set up a "little studio"?
I'm having a hard time seeing myself out there on the fringes of the arena firing up a printer.
I haven't talked to the rodeo committee about this possibility but plan on doing that also.
Thanks.
Peg

Peg, I hav enot done this myself but know a number of folks that do this sort of "event photography" (high school reunions, for example).

It is true, evidently, that having photos to hand out on site is a great boost for business. I guess a lot of folks are no longer entranced by the goings-on the next day or whenever they get around to checking out a website (if they ever do at all).

My suggestion is that you get a dye sublimation printer rather than use inkjet for this type of thing. A popular one is the Kodak 1400 - about $500 (maybe a rebate nowadays too) and the output is very photographic looking. In addition, you will know the cost per print each time (about $2) because the way dye subs work each print consumes exactly one sheet of paper and one length of the dye ribbon.

The 1400 can produce up to 8x12 prints - if you don't need them that big then you could check out the HiTi dye subs that handle up to 4x6 or 5x7 or somethign like that.

And no doubt the committee will want a piece of the action to allow you to profit from their event...so I'd check with them for sure.

Hi Peg,
I have done this before. It was in Banning , Ca. it was thier "
Stage coach days"
I took pictures of the Rodeo, all the Rodeo Queens in the contest.
I documented the Parade, the Queens contest, all venders, the Rodeo, the car show, the wisker contest and the Big street Mural being painted-free of carge for the city of Bannings Chamber of Commerce.
In return I got all kinds of publisity,I had a on site studio avaliable and was able to do my sales and pass out any and all info. on my business.
Here is what I did to do that:
I set up a ez up and got matching tarps for walls.
they ran electrisity for me so I had a 3 light system on site. I had a table with my laptop for people to view thier portraits and 3 epson R300 printers to print with.
just that simple.
here are a couple examples and in my gallery there are more: The Firemen,
Three Feathers, Rodeo Queens and A few of the Vintage / Old west shots we did.
I do hope this helps,
Debby
