What to Look For in a Scanning Service Bureau

Hello .

I am looking at using one of the many commercial scanning/imaging companies offering scans of slides and negatives, which I am very keen to do. This is so I may offer the prints and/or images for consideration by photography magazines for inclusion in their magazines and competitions. Could you possibly tell me what should I look and ask for from these companies, in order to achieve the best scanning and print from my 35mm colour slides.

Thanks.

Are you sure that the magazines require a digital image? If a digital image is what you need, and you don't want to buy the high quality film scanner you would need to scan slides, you'll need a service bureau. In the US, a service bureau has a drum-type scanner. This service is quite expensive. Alternatively, look for a service bureau that can scan your slides with a Nikon LS-2000 or 4000ED or 8000. These scanners can scan your slide as many as 16 times, giving you the best possible shadow detail. Also be sure the person who will be scanning your slides can do the necessary exposure and color correction. These scanners also automatically find and eliminate the inevitable dust spots.
Do these publishers want 48-bit, 36-bit, or 24-bit color? Also, what resolution (in pixels-per-inch, ppi)do they require? Your service bureau will want to know that.

  Hello Doug.

Thank you very much for your help. After reading your message I have contacted a film scanning service using Nikon 4000ED 4000dpi for scanning. Hopefully this will be what I'm after.
Thanks again for your helpful reply.
