Photography Question

Studio Lighting for children

Hello everyone, I am starting my own photo studio at home, photographing children. My backdrops are mainly scenic, my camera is a Canon 1Ds and I have noticed that digital is different from my other medium format cameras. My questions is, my family room is large and I have cathedral ceilings; which is the best way to set up of my lights (Alien Bees) to mainly concentrate on the subject but at the same time have detail from the scenic backdtop? I have umbrelas (medium size) and I am planing to buy some soft boxes. Also, looking to update my lightmeter? Any suggestions of what is good out there? So many questions!!!!

Thank you for helping.
Suzy

So Suzy, I just gotta ask: Have you talked to your insurance agent about what additional liability coverage you'll need, if any, for running this kind of business out of your home? YIKES !!!! Permits, licenses, etc.???

If you're interested, find the thread we did a week or so ago called something like STARTING PHOTO BIZ. You might not only find it interesting, but useful.
Mark

Personally I use the butterfly set up, where you have your main light right next to you, as high as it will go, and facing down over your subject, then I have a fill light (usually with a softbox), at a 45 degree angle to my subject at the same hight as my subject.

Look up some lighting set ups, maybe in the library or on line, I learnt quite a few different ones at collage and I like the effect of the butterfly set up the best.

I will be spending more time checking out your threads; Mark F has brought up a good point which I never stopped to think about. However, I would not think of opening a new studio without building some clients first. I am thinking of a side business as I cannot afford to loose my main profession in the medical field. However, photography is my pasion but more than that is my theraphy. I lost a son a year ago and I am trying to keep myself busy. I am glad to have found this site as I can ask you guys for help.

Thank you for your feedbacks,
Suzy
