Fuji HS-V2 Hyper Utility Software Just wondering if anyone has had any experience using the Fujifilm HS-V2 Hyper Utility Software for converting RAW files? I have just recieved an email from Fuji offering a £70 discount on it, and was just wondering if it was worth getting, or if I should just stick with Photoshop CS2? Thanks!

It depends whether you shoot in RAW format or not. Photoshop CS2 doesn't have the capability to post process FinePix RAW (.RAF) files for certain cameras. Most importantly the S3Pro, S2Pro, S20Pro, S9000/9500 cameras. I have found that shooting in RAW format is preferable as all of the functions except focus, ISO, shutter speed and fStop can be manipulated after the fact. As such HS-V2 is absolutely necessary. If you don't shoot in RAW format and also don't have a need for the "Studio" software that comes with HS-V2 then you don't really need it. However, once you have started shooting in RAW format and doing your own post processing, which by the way produces 16 bit TIFF files as opposed to the 8 bit TIF/JPEG files produced by the camera ... you won't go back to letting the camera process your shots. Hope this helps ... YMMV

Hi Charles, Thanks for the reply. Yes, I do shoot in RAW format; my question was basically asking whether the HS-V2 software was better for post processing RAW files than Photoshop CS2 (which seems to manage with my S9500 RAW files using the latest upgrade from the Adobe site). If CS2 is better / has more functionality than the HS-V2 software, then I will stick with that... Thanks again

Thanks for enlightening me!o) I was unaware of the CS2 upgrade. In answer to your question about the functionality of HS-V2 ... I used CS2 for processing my Canon RAW files and loved it. HS-V2 is a little Klunky and doesn't manage memory as well as CS2 did with my Canon 4MP files but that could be that I was processing less than half the pixles the S9000 produces in the .RAF files (18MB). I would have to upgrade to give you a definitive answer, so suffice it to say. It really doesn't DO much more than CS did with my Canon files.

Thanks, Charles - I think that pretty much answers my question, really: no point spending extra money on something that's not really any better than what I've already got!

Daniel, I have an S9000 (same as S9500) and PS CS2 but when I search for updates Adobe says there aren't any but CS2 still doesn't like my S9000 .RAF files. Where/When did you get the update that gets PS CS2 to process the S9500 .RAF files?? Any help would be greatly appreceiated.

Charles, The plugin is at: Then just click on Windows or Macintosh (I'm using Windows, I don't know what you use or if that makes a difference to the camera working....) Hope this helps!

Daniel Thank you!o) Now I can answer your Q a little better. CS2 is MUCH faster. Control over the tweek functions are better in HS-V2, you can use the arrow keys to increment the sliders more precisesly, but the rendition of the preview is SOOOO much faster that this is just a nit. HS-V2 needs to process the whole file when there is a change made and this stops all other post processing tasks until it has finished. IMHO ... CS2 (Camera RAW) is faster and the end results are close enough that HS-V2 would not be worth the extra cost. In truth, I like Photoshop and was really disappointed that the S9000/S9500 .RAF file wasn't supported in the Camera RAW plug-in I was using. Thanks again
