How to take good pics on New Year Party

Hello Every one,
I am new here, I have Cannon Digital Rebel with Sigma 18 - 125 Lens and Cannon 420 EX flash. Photography is my hobby but just started getting more seious in it. I have been asked to take photos on New Year's party.

The party is small approximately 100 people in small resturant with live music and DJ.

I wanted to take advice from pro's which modes I should be using to take good photographs and any other tips or techniques I should remember to take good photographs.

I really appreciate your help and time.

thanks
Irfan

Don't drink ourself and make certain you don't photograph anyone who's had too much.

Hey! Do you know if the restaurant has a low, light colored ceiling? If the ceiling is around 10 feet high or maybe just a tad bit higher, you should be able to tilt the flash head up so the light bounces off the ceiling and isn't so direct. It shouldn't require any compensation but anyway, if you want an easy way without much thinking, just go ahead and set it on P (Program mode). You should be able to flip the flash head up and take pictures of people that are maybe a short distance away and they should come out well. If the ceiling is pretty high and/or a dark color, you might have to just point the flash straight forward like normal unless you have or want to get a special light modifier.

Thank you very much andrew for the reply, I went yesterday to do some test runs and practice some other stuff. The resturant has low white ceiling. As you are saying tilting the flash was giving good results for people in front of camera.

one more thing I was not able to test and would be able to do it only on function night is to take broad range picture so that all the people in the picture are focused and not just the people in front of camera.

Apprciate your response to this question.

And John I am not planning to drink that night ;)
