Photography Question

Wildlife Tripod & Head

I'm curious if anyone would be able to help me with making this decision?

I'm comparing the Gitzo 1325 to the Giottos MT 8180 to use on wildlife expeditions.

The other items I'm comparing is the Wimberley Head vs the Mangoose M262 unit.

This is my first investment into this kind of equipment so quality is important, ease of use & value.

Your input is very much appreciated.

Thank you and happy holidays,
Linda

Howdy Linda: I think the answer to your question largely depends on what you plan on mounting on both the tripod and head. You should get a tripod that's sturdy and that you think will meet your future needs for a long while. Get a good one. My own preference is Gitzo with Linhof Profi heads and quick-fix release plates mounted on all my camera bodies. Some guys prefer Arca Swiss heads. Being able to actually lay hands (and a camera) on these things before you buy is really useful because tripods and heads are very much a matter of personal preference based on utility, ease of use, weight, budget, ad infinitim. I don't know a thing about Wimberly or Mangoose.

BTW, there's nothing wrong with looking for a used tripod and head, although you won't find many Gitzo pods around because they're so well made and durable that guys hang onto them like forever...like me. I've used my Reporter model for about 20 years, and my Studex for about 16.

You can check out specifications for various tripods and heads, including how much weight they're recommended for, at http://www.bhphotovideo.com. Also look at the really swell heads and accessories at http://www.reallyrightstuff.com. They tend to customize and like Arca Swiss. RRS is a good outfit to deal with.

Take it light.
Mark

I'm not familiar with the brands you listed but you mentioned "ease of use" as part of your decision criteria.

Personally, I prefer tripods with tension levers to extend and lock the legs rather those rings you have to unscrew.
The lever-designed legs can be adjusted much quicker and easier,...(at least for me).

Mark mentioned quick release plates.
Very important! These are tremendous time-savers.

Thanks for your response to my inquiry.

I do prefer the tension levers to the screw locks myself. The Gitzo 1325 seems to be the tripod most everyone is recommending but I can't get past those screw locks. I guess I'll keep looking.

Someone mentioned trying to rent equipment before purchasing so I'm looking into that.

Hoping every one has had a fantastic holiday.

Take care,
Linda
