Counting Down

The November contest results are only a week away give or take a few days. Would anyone like to share their most hopeful entry here? Last month I completely missed it, but some of you were right on the money! I think I'll just watch this time. Looking forward to seeing the best of YOUR best!

I think I only entered 2 last month. I would be more than happy to show 1, but I am/was the proud owner of the dreaded blue screen. Took the machine to Compucare today and they said my hard drive was gone gone gone gone! Nothing recovereable (sp?). Besides my wifes school stuff, I've lost about 1000 pics. My next endeavor will be an image filing system and putting them on a cd or dvd (which holds more?) at least once a month.
Woe is Bob...:-(

Bob

Oh Bob, I'm so sorry to hear that! When you have your equipment up and running again try getting an external HD for backup. I try to keep most of my stuff on 2 HDs at the same time. That way if one fails hopefully I still have the other. I'm about 5 months behind in backing up to CD-R.

  Sharon your making it tough.

In Digital Darkroom I like (Boston) and (night and Day) is not bad either.

In travel and Place I love (Swimming Pool in Maine). (My very favorite for the month).

In People it's Braids. It a black and white image but I just love it.

In Animal I like Kitty and the carved bear.

In the special category I like the Marriage the Ulitmate adventure of my daughter's wedding.

I really thought out my entries last month and I really like several of them.

LOL that more than one.

Kerby

P.S. My husband likes Twisted.

Nicole Kessel   How awful for you, Bob!! I can't even imagine how you must be feeling!

CD's will hold A LOT of photos at high res but, I don't know an exact number. I copy all my stuff to a CD atleast once a month if not once a week depending on how often I was shooting. I always make a back up CD now, too. I had a CD of mine get damaged and lost about 40 pictures once. So, I always double up on copies. Live and learn, right?

As for the contest, I have a record number of entries for November so I'm going to be devastated if I don't see at least one finalist. :) The following is the one I would really like to see make it to the finals.

Kerby, You need to be signed in then when you respond you'll see a place where you can add a photo. You have to upload a new photo. It can't be the one in your gallery.

Bob, this is a piece of crafter's foam punched full of holes and placed over my monitor. I zoomed during the exposure.

Kerby, as long as you are completely signed in (using both user id and password), you would select the number of photos, hit submit and it will take you to the upload image screen. You will have to find your original file from your hard drive/CD as you cannot load a photo that is already in your gallery. Hope this helps. BTW, I love your Swimming Pool in Maine!

Sharon, thanks for starting this thread again for November entries! Last month was intriguing, amusing and full of some wonderful entries I had not seen! I change my mind every five minutes about which of mine might find the judges favor, but here's one from the digital darkroom arena... and now I'm racing to my CD drive to copy all the images I've neglected to copy lately... soooo sorry Bob - I'm wondering if you might check with other "experts" who sometimes work wonders in disk recovery - or is Compucare convinced its hopeless??...just a thought.

I'm with you, Sharon! 'fraid to attempt a guess. I like my photos, but know that I'm new to photography and there are many more truly stunning pics out there each month that blow me away; I've got lots of room to grow! Still, my personal favorites (either for the finished shot, or for the fun I had taking it!) are: Light Lives Here, Phalaenopsis Study, Hands of Time, Night on the Mall.
Now, here's hoping our captors--er--judges--make that 12/21 deadline... ;) Last month was agony (funny, in retrospect, but agony) checking in every 3 minutes!

I promise, this will be my last post on this vexxing subject -- what did I do wrong, that I had to "re-upload" these 4 pics for inclusion in this thread? I've seen the "Photo ID" option before, when replying to threads, to enable you to pull in a copy of a previously-uploaded pic... well, all four of these are in my gallery already, from Nov. But, even fully signed in to BP, I didn't get that Photo ID box when writing my last reply, above...! So, I browsed out on my C: to find these again, and of course, now they are in my "Your Photos" page as 4 new (duplicated) uploads... ;)

Thanks, Margie, for the compliment! I think your floral closeups are gorgeous! And thanks for clarifying; I knew I'd seen "Photo ID" before, so I figured I was doing something wrong.
Carolyn, your gallery is beautiful! And studded with Finalists... whether or not you can predict which ones the judges will like, clearly, you've got a handle on it!

You have a good eye and a nice gallery, Girish! If you enjoy comments/compliments it's a rather unspoken fact that if you will visit other galleries and comment on entries as well you'll start seeing members comment on yours in return, but I would be happy to comment of a few of yours. You have some really pretty images.

Only being 6 months new to BP...do they generally announce the finalists early in December due to the holidays? I'm assuming that because of the amount of photos, it will still take the judges just as long...but I'm hoping...

I've been entering for about a year and a half now. It seems to me they get announced about the time they're supposed to most of the time. Occasionally they are a little late but I've never noticed them being like real late. I get antsy when they are late but not upset. I figure the longer they take the better job they're doing of it LOL. Last month it was like a whole room full of people sitting around a table banging on the table with their spoons saying, "give us finalists, give us finalists" and they did but it didn't seem as though there were as many as there had been in previous months. Maybe they felt like that had to hurry? So I hope not on my account :)

Interesting pattern... From Oct. 2004 through now, the number of Finalists goes like this, month-by-month: Oct. 737, Nov. 772, Dec. 639, Jan. 633, Feb. 860, Mar. 875, Apr. 836, May 873, Jun. 1022, July 1058, Aug. 986, Sep. 873, Oct. 733.
So yes, Oct 05 did have fewer (than Sept.) but Jan 04 was the lowest of the past year---Seems like we must all be doing our best work in the summer! ;)

Christopher! Thanks for the stats...real intriguing! It would be interesting to know the judges rationale for the 40% difference from low to high month. I don't think the entry totals varied by that percentage, but not sure about that. I imagine that they are considering quality, not quantity???
By the way, is it just me that sees a great "face" in your "hands of time" image? LOL I see a wonderful mustache and eyes....but maybe I've been glued to BP for too many hours - again!
Regards...

Hi, Everybody! Well, I'm with Sharon...I missed my guess last month.
In fact, I like to have a little more fun and try to pick which finalists (in my favorite categories) will win...I didn't do too good at that either last month! Although, I did enjoy the judges' finalist picks last month...

Very interesting statistics, Christopher! I know that I'm feeling a "winter slump"...My leaf-less trees and dead grass don't really compare to all the beautiful snow scenes. =)

That's an interesting statistic, re: the number of finalists broken down by month.
Each month has the same number of posting days (give or take a few), and the total entry number doesn't change much each month,...(except for a steady increase as time passes).
Could it be that as the weather warms we become more artistic?
....Interesting.

Sherry,
I know what you mean. Winter scenics with no snow around seem somewhat lifeless and dead.
Given that, you can enjoy shooting in winter. It's a good time to visit state parks and national refuges.
...No crowds, no misquitos, and the resident wildlife is much more active during the day.

Another favorite winter pastime is photographing ice formations. These are always fascinating and unique in shape and design.

You're not alone, Brian... I see that face too. I didn't see it, when I took the shot, but I did once I cropped it.
Sherry--I'm with you! We have yet to have a "picturesque" snowfall here. All I heard all summer was how bad this winter was going to be for us--I'm still waiting and hoping it will be, camera ready to attempt some snow shots!

Bob & Christopher, It's nice to hear that others know the feeling of the "winter slump." Maybe, we'll all find something worth photographing...even without the snow!
So, is everybody ready for Christmas...all the presents bought and wrapped? I'd hate to have the wait for finalist being interrupted with such details! How stressful to have the holdiays AND the finalist announcement so close together...=)

Sherry, I've been done shopping for some time now. The only thing disrupting my f5's is that I'm on dial up at my mother-in-law's rather than at home on DSL!

Thanks, Margie....The stuff on BP is fine, it's just such low resolution that the pics would be only good for postage stamp size prints.
I now have to resolve, hey, new year coming up...to make a folder for the pics I want to save and put them on a "gold", I read that somewhere today, cd, every month or so.

I feel your pain, Bob, concerning your hard drive crash. I had one go insane on me a couple of months ago. Luckily, all the important stuff on it was backed up elsewhere. It certainly put a little fear in me though, but I still didn't want to bother with backing up all my shots. There are a lot that aren't really worth backing up but I want to keep anyway. So, I decided to go a little nuts and buy two of the biggest hard drives I could get ( at a decent price ) along with a RAID controller card and put them in one of my old PC's and set it up as a server. The drives are mirrored and hot-swappable, so if one dies, I replace it with a new one ( without having to shut down the machine ) and the system automatically copies everything to the new drive. Surely overkill for some, but the drives are 320GB, always easily accesible, and I don't have to deal with trying to find something in a collection of DVD's. It was a fun project besides.

Bob, when I edit photos for the web I always save at the highest image quality I can. I got a couple of 4x6" prints made this past week and they looked just fine. I'm sure I wouldn't be able to get an enlargement done with only a 72ppi resolution, but I'll be using my web files for 4x6 prints for now on. They looked that good.

hey bob...that stinks. I lost my external hard drive last year, lost a ton of files..pics and all my music and drum videos.. nothing too important but some things I really really would have liked to keep. It stinks awhole lot when that happens! Now I got a Maxtor one touch external harddrive..no more western digitals for me, yeah they replaced the drive for free but said they wouldnt retrieve the files on it.. I really have to back up all my files, im sooo azy, I know it will happen again, its only a matter of time. problem is, the more time I wait, the more time it will take to back up all the files (thousands) and all non replaceable if you ask me.
good luck!
Craig-

Hi folks... Not sure if this approach will work for everyone. (I'm still new to managing a large number of files, so this might not be an efficient library system for some. I've only got about 3,500 today.) I have a folder called Pics. Under that, I create a subfolder every month, by broad theme, such as "12_05 Cathedral" or "12_05 Tucson" and as I offload camera pics, I put them in the appropriate folder. Any edits I may make get saved in a folder such as "12_05 Cathedral Edits". I deliberately watch to make sure no folder exceeds 700KB, in order to match up with a CD's capacity (otherwise, I create a "part 2" folder for that theme and start filling that up.) Then usually in the first week of the next month, I'll burn those few "12_05" folders to cd(s), label and store them. It has been a pretty easy system so far. (I still keep the folders on my C: drive, after backing up to CD, but drag them into a "Burned_to_CD" folder to keep my file tree clean. After several months I'll purge them, when I no longer feel likely to want "immediate" access to them.)

  Congratulations to all the finalists.
Best of luck in the following round.

I was way off on my choice but I was happy to have one (File Ball).

Thank you Better Photo for my finalist.

I second your thanks, Kerby... I just about fell off my chair seeing one of my pictures there, this morning! (And in keeping with everyone's observations, not a picture I had predicted! "Yellow Spiral") Thank you, BP judges!

Congratulations to all the finalists!!! Those who didn't receive one don't be discouraged. There are a lot of awesome photos each month that aren't finalists and there's always next month! Good luck next round.

Hi Girish... at the time you compose your reply, if you scroll further down (near the Submit button) you can specify you want to inclue a picture (or up to 5 pictures) via the little drop-down... then on the next screen, you specify the pics to upload from your C:

Great reminder, Christopher! And for the newbies: do it before midnight PST on the last day of the month because your page is wiped out on the first of the month.

  Thanks for the reminder Christopher.

I printed mine off (had 30 so far this month) and was looking at how many I had in each category to try and figure out what to put in tomorrow.

11 in Digital Darkroom, 5 in people, 4 in travel, 3 in elements and 3 in macro, 2 in the monthly theme, 1 in floral and 1 in landscape.

I may resubmit the one I got a finalist on last month (file ball) but there I am back in the dark room again. LOL....Kerby

Thanks Chris! Just printed mine. I had 6 in flowers, 9 in detail and macro (I just got a macro lens this month), 1 in elements of design, 2 in monthly theme (1 was a resubmit of a finalist in another month) and 1 animal. Any favorites for anyone?
