Photography Question

Margie Hurwich

OMG!!!!! First Sale...but...

I'm not exactly sure what to charge. A co-worker asked me to take some shots of a rose and have one matted as a Christmas present for his fiance. He has opted for a 10x15 of the shot. OK...so the stupid question of the day is...how much do other people charge for something like this? Thanks for any advise.

I would charge $20 to take the photo, and then charge $150 for a 10X15. I would reccomend moutning the photo.

Thanks, Janessa. I'm still so shocked I'm selling...it's so surreal!

You could start with something like all your costs x 2 or 3...

I wouldn't charge over a hundred dollars. This is a co-worker we're talking about, not "Time" magazine.

Figure what your costs are going to be, and whether or not you can re-sell the image.

I honestly think that if you charge the cost of the print plus 50% plus $25 that is a very fair deal and will not scare off your "client." In other words, if it cost you $15 to make the print, charge $25 for the print plus $25 for your time ($50). If you can re-sell the image (stock, other people, etc.), then you are that much further ahead of the game.

Don't try to get rich on one picture. The best way to make money in business is to make a little money on a lot of things, each of which costs you next to nothing.

As I hadn't had much responds to my questions...I did a search here on BP for price of photos. I found a Q&A discussion whereas someone charged $30 for an 8x12 and $70 for a 12x18. My shot is a 10x15, so I was thinking somewhere in the middle of this...around $50. Plus, he had me mat it. This was about $45 as I double matted it so there was a place for my signature. So, in the end...I was thinking $100. Does this seem too high?

I think $100 USD is most reasonable, especially considering you are doing a custom shoot. Make sure he understands that you'll be retaining the copyrights (You should get him to sign an agreement to this effect if you live in Canada).

Since matting and printing costs can vary so much depending on the type, quality, and if you are doing it yourself or paying to have it done, I'd first run a total of your production costs to make sure you can turn a profit at this price, and don't forget to assign some value for your time.

Good luck & congratulations!

- Eric.
