Picking the right digital camera I am buying our second digital camera for my 18 year old son. He started last year with the small HP Photosmart. We love going to the Motorcross races. Last year he borrowed a Canon Rebel and we got Great shots of Ricky Carmichael, Bubba Stewart etc. I really can not afford the Rebel. What would be the next best camera maybe priced around $500-600? Thanks for any help

Well, for starters, what type of camera are you wanting? Do you want a higher end P&S or a DSLR. I doubt that you'll be able to get a DSLR for that much though. PS, what HP did you have? I used to have the 720.

Nancy, if your som is going to shoot motocross, then a DSLR might be the only choice. The advanced point & shoot models, even those with the 10X zoom lenses, still suffer from the shutter delay - that is, the lag time between the time you press the shutter button and the shutter aactually going off. FOr day-to-day stuff, this isn't so critical, but for fast-moving action, it can be the difference between a great shot and something really disappointing. Luckily, DSLRs are coming down in price, but anything less might prove frustrating for that purpose.

I do agree with Bob, about most likely needing a DSLR. So you might check out getting it used on ebay. I just checked ebay and you can get the Rebel for just about 500$. Just be sure to ask the seller if you can return it if it's not as good as they advertised it.

Thanks Brendan and Bob for the advice. I will check out Ebay. I have been researching the Panasonic Lumix and the Kodak P80. Any thoughts?

Nancy, I h ave the lumix FZ20, and while it's a very nice camera for a lot of things, sports shooting ain't one of them. There is a noticeable shutter lag, which makes things really difficult for action shooting.
