Directly viewing an image on a laptop

I want to be able to take a picture and directly bring it up on a lap top for customer viewing. Once I do that I want to be able to create folders and indexes to these images as well as print them out for further customer review. What do I need in order to accomplish this?

Wendi, your digital camera produces what is really only a digital file and stores it on the memory card.

So, to do what you describe, you need a way to transfer that file from the card into the computer. This will probably require a card reader - they're usually pretty cheap - because there are different types of memory card formats and it's ulikely that your laptop has a slot to insert the memory card from your camera directly (unless it's a Sony laptop with a memory stick slot and the camera uses a memory stick as well).

So, you get a card reader - these usually attach to the computer via the USB port. You stick the card in the reader (that's plugged into the computer) and (hopefully) the laptop operating system will recognize this as a newly attached "drive". Whether this happens depends on the OS - Mac does it easily; Windows may or may not depending on the version.

Once the laptop sees the new "drive", then it's a simple matter of creating a new folder on the laptop hard drive and dragging the file(s) over to the new directory you created. You can then print them out using whatever graphics program you want.

If you want to go fancier, then perhaps software designed to organize your images wouldmake sense. iView MediaPro is one of a gaggle of programs out there that give you the ability to track where images are stored, make annotations, and even print out contact sheets and the like.

  Wendi,

I know exactly what you're trying to do, and am in the process of researching that. Some newer cameras have blue tooth technology that will automatically send your image to your computer once you snap the shutter. Many event photographers are looking for this, so their customers can immediately preview the image, purchase, and have a print in minutes. So don't fret - it's out there. But it may be expensive! Make sure you post if find an answer, and I'll do the same!

  Good Morning ,
this is something I do at every on site event.
Bob has really got you started.
heres how we handle a event, lets say your at a store event:kids or pets.
* we shoot on small memroy cards (on ebay you can get lots of cards at a cheap price-recomend Lexar 80x or?)
*have a "sitting jacket" for them to fill out: Name, address, phone, email,
a small discription of what type of group they are:
" family of 4:2boys,mom and dad all in white shirts w/jeans, poolde dog."
* do the shoot take the card and sitting jacket an dput in a numbered envelop and give it to the person showing your pictures( you will need to have help if things will be steady-remember"IT TAKE LONGER TO VIEW THEN TO TAKE THE PORTRAITS)
* load them in under the persons name.
* I show them on windows picture viewer.this gives you a way to proceed through the file on a large screen and alows you to rotate them and zoom in to look at details.
* have a price sheet already that you can place in front of them, record their purchase on the sitting jacket - this way you have a record of what you did in that venue for next years concideration.
* I print useing Epson R300 Printers 1-4 of them depending on size of group.
8x10's print on 1 printer-5x7's and wallets another.
* and I always have a middle of the line package that would be just a disk of all shots taken of their family.
to encourge them to take this package- burning a disk takes 3 mins. and cost . 27 cents to make vs. the printing witch takes about 10-12 mins and the cost of paper , ink, and a envelope to put the prints in.

** because viewing takes so long- I just bought the Epson picture maker-so I can take my memory card from the camers, insert it into the picture mate near my studio set up and print a proff sheet-that gives them something to look at while waiting to view.

My canon 20d has the capability to be attached with a cord from the camera to my laptop. When I take the picture it is instantly viewed on the laptop. It is saved to the hard drive not the cf card. The software comes with the camera. It works great. Hope that helps
