Noise vs. Grain

I used to frequently shoot with ISO 3200 BW film. I love grain. I could look at grainy photos all day long.

But, I don't care much for noise. I know it's different, but in terms of thinking about high ISO, it's similar. But, noise looks gross to me.

I'm wondering though, is anyone using noise as a creative tool, similar to how some people use(d) grain with film?

Post some examples, if you like. I'd like to see creative noise.

Jerry, I have two on my gallery, not overly noisy, sort of the old 400 ASA grain effect: Pumpkins on p. 1 and Waiting on p. 2. Soon, there'll be even noisier ones up -- I agree with you that it's a great effect.

And here's one I'm still working on -- it's noisier than the others.

I've got a photo in my gallery on page one. It's called "The Gardener." I added some grain in Photoshop CS. I think it looks better and is slightly more appealing than the clear version.

I have one in my gallery HERE done the old fashioned way.

Jerry, I agree with you about the difference between noise and grain. Photos with extreme grain sometimes take on the look of a pointilist painting. To me, digital noise tends to just look like interference, like something went wrong.

To each his own, though.

Chris

Yeah, I have some using 3200 black and white film as well. Not as many of course.

Digital noise especially looks ugly once the ISO gets to high or too much enhancement is done. In some cameras especially, there's horizontal bands of noise that's almost impossible to cover up or to make it look normal.

Andrew, I have been hearing reports that the 5D is having banding problems for those who shoot in AI Servo Mode. Something to do with the motor interfering with the sensor, or something. But, of course, if you call Canon, they act like it's the first time anyone has told them of it.
