Photography Question

OM-1 a good choice or not, help

OM-1. I am trying to get back into photography and I use to use and OM-1, back in the 70-80's. I am now disabled and money is a problem. I checked with on buying a Nikon FM3a since it is manual, and the equip. I would want with it and it was too high, over $2000.
I would like to get a OM-1 and the equip for it, but since it is no longer made I dont know where to find a new one, plus if it broke, I would be out of luck.
Does any one know of a place that I can trust to get one and so on, and is this even a choice !!

Well, your chances of finding a new OM-1 are slim to none and Slim left town. However, the chances of buying a good used one are excellent. B&H has several listed in their Used Department (OM-1s, 2s, 3s & 4s). I would not think twice about buying used equipment from them (since I have done so). I can't tell you where to get one repaired since my 26 year old OM-2n, which has been used and abused and is suffering from brassing, has never been in the shop. However, I am sure it wouldn't be too much of a problem to find someone who can work on it.

You don't say whether or not you've got much of an investment any Oly manual focus (MF) lenses. If you haven't got much Oly equipment, there's no real point in going back to Oly unless it's particularly near and dear to you, the lenses haven't been made in years and nice clean used stuff is starting to get a little expensive. KEH would be a good source for a used body and Oly accessories, the OM-1 is mechanical so aside from potential lightmeter issues (which you can buy separately anyway) it would probably soldier on several more years.

Nikon MF gear wouldn't run you $2000. Lots of nice secondhand MF AI/AIS lenses on ebay, KEH is again a source for a nice used body - FM2n, FE-2, N8008s, N90s for about $200-300. These are very well-built cameras.

Are you a knowledgeable ebayer? I bought my FM3a used off ebay for just over $350 from a studio photographer who ran off a few rolls and decided to go digital. Got a bitingly sharp Kiron 105mm/2.8 macro in the Nikon N/AI mount for $60, didn't look like it had even been used.

Buying new isn't as important with this type of MF 35mm film gear. Unless the shutter's wornout, or it's a swimmer, it will likely last you for a good long time.

Thanks to all of you for the responding to my requrests. In response to the one response, I have no equip. at all, + I dont know a think about ebay. I have to start all over again. Condiering that, any idea of a way to start again ? Some more infor. about me to take in consideration if you dont mind. I am home bound, and can get around in my back yard, and my wife can bring me in things to take pictures of. I live where I can get spider, deer and other animals and birds. I also love rocks and so on. I just cant see some one like me with a digital, because of the back of the camera has the computer type screen, and I like to do things my own way.
thanks for your help
Jake

  Jake,
If price is a concern, almost any of the major brand manual focus cameras from 25 or so years ago will do the job. The good news is that all the 50mm lenses are great. Look for the 50mm f1.8's. You can put inexpensive extension tubes between the lens and camera and focus even closer for bugs and such.

I use the old Canon cameras, but the batteries can be hard to find. You can avoid this problem with the Nikon FM2 or FM2n, or the Olympus OM-2n. If you buy from KEH.com, the foam light trap on the door and the foam mirror bumper are already replaced. 50mm lenses for these are less than $50. You can add telephotos and wide angles if you think you need them. Contact me through my web site. I have some things I don't need that maybe you can use.
