Scanning Slides

I have hundreds of slides and would like to have high res scans of some of them to print at home or have printed. They are $5.00 each at our lab. Can anyone suggest which would be the best scanner to buy to do slides?. I have the HP scanjet 4470 and it doesn't work well....Thanks for any advice..

I have success with Epson line of scanners with the negative and slide scanning attachment. Although a 4800x9600 has been recommended for a clean scan but a lower resolution scanner has worked well, too.
But do set the DPI to 300 to scan.

I have a Canon CanoScan 8400F. It's great little flatbed. I believe it scans at the 4800x9600 that Nobi recommended. It scans slides and negs in both 35mm and 2 1/4 (120, 220). It's pretty good.
