Hi
Ihope someone can help me. I use a canon eos300d on auto focus. When I take a photo I make sure the red dot is flashing on the spot I want ie my childs face, however when I put it onto the computer it is out of focus. What am I doing wrong.

You might want to try using the A-DEP setting. Try that and see what happens...Are you using manual focus or Auto? Try doing maual and automatic as well.

Or set the camera on "P" mode, turn off all but one of the focus spots, focus holding the trigger halfway down, continue holding the trigger halfway and recompose and shoot.....
Hope this helps,
Bob

Your problem also may be related to very shallow depth-of-field. That's why Janessa recommended the A-DEP setting. It will try to increase your f-stop (increasing depth-of-field) until all of the AF points that are being used are in focus.

You can also achieve this by shooting in Av mode and setting your f-stop to f8 or so. Check the resulting shutter speed and use a tripod if it gets too slow to hand hold.
