Teleconverters

Does anyone know if the teleconverters will work with regular lenses...Like will they work with regular Canon EOS lenses or do they only work with "L" Glass?

Is that what you ordered? I thought you had L glass though the 100-400 isn't that L....Well give them a good work over on your regular lenses and let me know....
Thanks Bob

Canon's own EF teleconverters work only with a select few L lenses (primes 135mm and longer, plus the 70-200 f/2.8L, f/2.8L IS, and f/4L, and 100-400 zooms). Sigma's EX APO teleconverters work only with a select few of their own lenses and those same Canon L lenses. (see Sigma TC info) The reason is both are designed with an extended front element that nests into the back of the compatible lens. The TC's front element will interfer with the rear element of other lenses.

There are teleconverters made by Kenko, Tamron, some others that are designed with elements that do not extend beyond the mount flange. These can be used on most any lens, but give best results with lenses and zooms that have focal lengths longer than 50mm.

Note that at present there are no teleconverters that can be used with Canon's EF-S lenses. The EF-S lenses have rear elements that extend back into the camera body, and would contact a TC's elements.

Thanks, Jon!! I lucked out on that one....:-)
It does make sense, tho, and I didn't think of it...why sell a converter that would fit all lenses when it would cut your lense sales in half.

??? I don't think TCs have a significant effect on lens sales one way or the other. Canon's and Sigma's TCs have limited use because they are optimized for the lenses they do work with. It doesn't make any sense to compromise the design to make their TCs compatible with any other lenses.

A 2x TC on a 28-80 f/3.5-5.6 is a waste of time and money. The resulting 56-160 f/7-11 is of no practical use. Hobbling a terrific 24-70 f/2.8L with a 1.4x or 2x gives worse results than a $200 55-200 f/4-5.6 lens.

Sorry, Jon, I was just thinking that if I had a 200mm lens and could buy a 2x extender for half the price of a 400mm lens why would I buy the 400.
But, if the 2x extender I bought for my 100-400L Canon will work, I'm happy.
Please, please, please, don't burst my bubble....:-)
