Best IS Zoom lens for Digital Rebel I'm looking for a new multi-purpose lens for my Canon Digital Rebel - either on with image stabilizer or one with a wider aperture (2.8). I would like to have the advantage of using only one zoom lens on vacation with or at times without a tripod. What lenses would you recommend? JD

EF-S 17-85 f/4-5.6 IS USM to my mind offers the best combination of zoom range, build and features (especially IS). But it's a bit pricey. Otherwise there is the Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 EX DC. 1-2 stops faster aperture, but less zoom range. On a tighter budget there is the Sigma 18-125 f/3.5-5.6 DC. Also the 18-200 f/3.5-6.3 zooms from Tamron and Sigma, but I'm not a fan of such super-zooms. Lots of good choices in 24-xx or 28-xx zooms of either f/2.8 or f/3.5-4.5, But I personally would not give up the wide angle of 17-24/28 (27mm-38/44mm equivalent with 35mm film) when travelling. YMMV.

Jon and Howie, Thanks for your timely responses. The 2 lenses that I have now are: the 18-55mm EFS that came with the Canon Digital Rebel plus a Promaster 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 zoom. I could carry the f18-55 on vacation because it's so light weight plus a zoom that has IS and the f2.8 aperture option to replace my Promaster. JD
