main light for indoor portraits hi I want to shoot more portraits indoors, but found it very difficult to get good lighting...i dont have any special lighting equipments so I want to just use every day equipments. should I just use a regular lamp without its shades for main light? if so, how should I place it? I noticed in studios, they have similiiar lamps but point it at the face. should I also tilt it and do the same? thanks and any help is appreciated!

If you use halogen lights your subject will have a yellow/gold hue. Different lighting renders different colors. If you want control and proffesional results you may want to look for a good deal on a set of studio lights. One light source is going to produce harsh shadows and for portraits you want soft flatering light.

You can use $10 clamp-on style worklights with the aluminum reflector dish(like from Wal-Mart or Lowe's) add a portrait bulb from a camera shop (I've been told you should add a ceramic adapter ring to it)...clamp it to whatever you can. I started with 3 of these as my main, fill and hairlights. I didn't find out about the portrait bulb until I had ordered my strobe set) If you do have a few hundred dollars to play with, you can get an inexpensive set of strobes. My set is Britek and I LOVE them. Whatever you get, make sure they aren't throwaways...ie, you can change out the fuses and bulbs.
