Photography Question

Pictures green in one hour photo shops

For the last several months whenever I put candids on a CD and take them to a one hour photo lab, the prints have a definite green/blue hue. They are hideous. I am not doing anything differently, and they used to turn out fine. I have tried three or four different labs. I would appreciate any help I can get. Prints are fine if I print them off my computer or send them to the lab. Thanks, Jane Holestine

I would think that if you took them to several ONE HOUR labs they would all turn out different colors. I never recommend one hour labs...... unless you want something in a hurry and do not care what they look like.

  Jane,

Are you putting the media card in the machine and letting the lab print them? I have had the same problem and this is what I found. If I shoot some pictures and take them home and do some adjusting on Photoshop the picture come out with the blue/green hue. If I print them on the Kodak machine that print them out in a couple minutes I don't have this problem. When I print them the other way not all my prints come out saturated about half. On the machine at the beginning when all you pictures come up the is a INHANCE BUTTON check marked turn the switch off and my picture have come out fine after that. If you don't do any adjusting on you picturs at home they should me fine. It has something to do with Photoshop and the program that the the one hour labs are using. I just started having this problem and I checked with each lab and all 3 had just been updated with some new programs and software. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the responses. Ric, when you talk about the inhance button, is that on the machine that prints out instantly or the one the lab prints? If I understand you correctly, you turn that switch off.

  Jane,

The one hour lab has the inhance button precheched you have to turn it off. I'm not sure on the instant Kodak machine. Ask someone behind the counter those machine can be setup different between the stores. I saw the guy go in to the setup mode and change things. Ask if the inhance is turned off. What I did is try one picture that you know is saturated and print it on the Kodak machine for testing purposes, that way your know how it is setup. Let me know if it works. This problem has made me crazy for 2 months trying to figure it out.

I will try it. I don't use One Hour often, but when I just want prints from a birthday party or something, it is handy. By the way, is your balloon picture "Nothing but Hot Air" from the balloon fest at Forest Park in St. Louis? Thanks again for your input.

Yes, That is from the Forest Park balloon race. That is when I started to notice my picures being over saturated. And all the stores I went to were all upgrading there systems at the same time. Half of my balloon picture were saturated. Do you adjust your pictures in Photoshop? I was just wondering if I took my card from my camera to the one hour store if the pictures would turn out the same with on adjustments at home. I don't think so. I think Photoshop inhances the pictures and then the one hour machine inhances them again causing the saturated pictures.

I really did not do anything to my pictures from the balloon fest except crop them. The color was already so brilliant. However, I have not tried to print any of them either.

I have used the one 1 hour lab for years with no problems; until I started having reprints made from photos I had edited in the computer! Then they had the same problem you are describing. I tried several labs, but with no improvement (all, by the way, readily reprinted any I was unhappy with, at no cost, and managed to get rid of the colour caste).
The automated machinery seems to be fooled by adjustments made to the files: it has no problem with positives and negatives on film; just digitised pictures...so, if you want to use a lab, tell them to please inspect the pictures rther than depending on the machine. If they know what you DON'T want, they will be able to give you what you DO! And they will probably value both your business and their reputations enough to show their mettle...if one won't, others will!
