Photography Question

Jennifer L. Bales

Can an idea be copyrighted?

I was wondering, can I copyright an idea? If I have a great idea for Holiday poses, can I copyright that idea or can I only copyright the actual photos? I had a brainstorm idea for holiday photos, but then was viewing other photographer's galleries here on BP and found I was not the first to have this brainstorm idea. I already bought all of the stuff to take the pics, and wanted to be sure I wasnt infringing on any "idea" copyright laws. However, if that person hasn't copyrighted the idea, can I do it? My guess is that I can only copyright my actual photos and not the idea.

You cannot infringe on a pose anymore than someone could copyright the idea to tie the wrapper on the bread bag BEFORE you put it into the pantry.

Just let us know what all of your ideas for the poses are in great detail and we'll let you know ;-) j/k. I would assume you couldn't copyright a pose but only your photos.

Thanks everyone. That's what I thought!
Justin.... LOVE the logo!! Very original and I love the graphic impact. Did you hire someone or did you make it yourself? It's really cool!

Thank you Jennifer, such a compliment! I made it myself late one night when I got bored. It really was a pretty easy task in photoshop. I just created the filmstrip and put images into, then made them all one layer and resized and skewed and things. Thanks again!
