Macro 50mm/ 100mm or Ext Tubes? Hi, I am interetsted in buying some gear for macro photography I already have EF-S 17-85 & 100-400L for my Canon 20D. Do you suggest any other option? or any other brand lenses? Thanks in advance.

Personally, I would go with the EF 100mm f/2.8 macro. I think it might be easier to use and have a better field of view. Depending on what else you might do like portraits or maybe photographing paintings, you might want to change what you do. Anyway, I wouldn't pick extension tubes because the macro lens is more geared towards close focusing while the other two lenses aren't. The macro lens also has a flat focus plane as compared to rounded ones in the other lenses. I would also pick the 100mm over the 50mm because I have heard that it's better to take macro shots with longer lenses.

My opinion - The 50mm macro is fine for studio product work, but too short for most outdoor macro work. The 100mm would be more suitable for outdoors, especially flowers, bugs, etc. Extension tubes would work really well with your 100-400 lens, and would be ideal (if not better) for the same subject matter as the 100mm. However, you would need a whole lot of extension tubes with the 100-400 zoom (which would not be feasible) in order to focus as close as the 100 macro can focus. Hope this helps some. Michael H.
