580 exposure problem

I have been having a problem with my Canon 580 flash. So many posts I've read here mention their problem is underexposure, but I have the opposite problem.
I'm not what is happening, but sometime in the middle of my shoot my flash wants to change settings and I'm unable to get it back to the original setting thus creating REALLY overexposed pictures. I didn't even touch anything so it's quite annoying.

Anyone have any advice??

Thank you!

What settings reset themselves? Set on the camera or the speedlight? What exposure mode are shooting?

Just a reminder - any custom functions set (like 2nd curtain sync) or any exposure compensation and flash exposure compensation set on the camera, the choice of metering and AF mode are only in effect in the "Creative" modes - P, Av, Tv, M. Switch to green box or any icon mode and the camera goes back to its defaults.
