  Jeremy,
For general photography basics, see:
"How to Take Great Photographs With Any Camera"
Jerry Hughes; Phillips Lane Publishing
ISBN 0-9634348-9-6

For the British Grand Prix (a Formula One race) you will need additional information. Car racing photography is specialized work. Go to a very large bookstore or library and look in the photography section for some books about racing photography. You don't need the "coffee table" books with stunning photographs; you need one that discusses equipment, film and technique. Your basic issues will be selecting vantage points from which to photograph the race and how to capture very fast moving objects on film.
