Photography Question

I am so excited!!!

I just received my studio lighting equipment last night! I sat up all night putting it together and "looking" at it. My husband said "wow, you really are a photographer now!" LOL. I can't wait to get home and play with it.

Congratulations, Natalie! Which lights did you end up getting? I bought a real inexpensive Smith Victor set just a couple of months ago and I'm already ready for an upgrade!

I know that feeling you have... I remember it well! Just like a kid on Christmas morning! Have fun! ;)

This is the kit I got. I wasn't sure if I was making the right decision, especially considering I never saw it in the "flesh". OMG, it is strong, and sturdy. The case is amazing (huge!) and makes it really easy to cart around and store. I upgraded one of the umbrella's to a softbox though.

I'll let you all know how it goes once I get it up and running this week.

Natalie, you forgot to put what kit :o) Just curious because I am going to buy a new set any day.

Nicole, why are you unhappy with your set now? Just curious, I am trying to find out all the information I can. :o)

Melissa

Looks like a nice set Natalie! They should be really versatile. Can't wait to see what you do with them!

Melissa, my kit was under $200 and each light is only 45 w/s. They're just not powerful enough to photograph more then a couple people (adults) at a time. It's fun for now, but I know I will want a larger set in the near future. They don't have any modeling lights on them either which would really come in handy when trying to set up a shot. Thank goodness I have a digital camera!

I'll probably go with the Alienbees once I do decide to upgrade. I have only heard positive things about them and they are fairly inexpensive for what you get.

Wow! Those look really cool. I like that you have that car adapter! I wonder how much that full length reflector is with that stand. Cool company, thanks for sharing!!

Let us know how the system is!! :o)

  Sandra,
Please don't be discouraged by the problems that SOME people had setting up thier lights.
Sometimes you can help someone as much as possible(and there were 3 of us helping) but ...
that person finally admitted she tried everything BUT what she was asked to try- when she finally did what she was asked to do(by phone) she got the results she needed and has had nothing to complaine about since.
Please don't let others discouge you from getting what you want-I will help if you need any help.
My very best in your ventures!!
and Nat, congradulations!
you know the test settings I'm sure.
have a great time.

I agree with Debby, just because someone has issues doesn't mean that you will. Everyone takes in information in different ways and has to go about their own way of learning. Some people have to be exposed to information over and over and then apply when they feel comfortable. Other people learn by jumping right in and making all kinds of mistakes. Don't let anyone discourage you or get scared off! :o) Heck if I listened to all those people that told me kids would 'mess' or 'change' my life heck I would have never of had the greatest time of my life!! Does that mean that I don't have problems --LOL--- :o)

Now you've gone and done it Natalie. You'll never be the same photographer again. You have now entered the "twilight zone", a world of shadows and light. I'm sure you are going to enjoy the lighting, it's a whole other world and it's a blast.
Good luck and enjoy.

Regards
Gary

So far so good, I am loving them. Although a little hard to determine correct exposure without a lightmeter. I'm just using the camera at the moment. I'll post some pics from last weeks photo shoot. It was the first time I had used it on a client. She was rapped!!!

That's funny Nat,
The 350D should work just as the 20D
for all of these the camera was set at 200/f22 the main on full , fill on half and backlight on half power, lights in the clock position(as discribed in the thread " Studio Photography parts 1,2,3 and 4)
I NEVER use a light meter in any of my digital shots.just not nessisary.
Anyway maybe you may want to try these, take a look at the thread-these settings work every time for those who actually try them.
Just a Thought,

Thanks everyone, I'll give your settings a go Deb. I usually set my camera at ISO 200, 1/125 f8. This was when I was only bouncing my speedlite from the ceiling though. I suppose the settings will now be different.

I've been meaning to print out and read the "studio photography" threads but I just don't get the time. I don't have the internet at home and only have it here at work 9-5 3 days a week, so it is hard to keep up, as obviously I need to get my work done first (how rude...... : ) fancy expecting me to work at work! LOL).

Hey, Natalie! I have those threads saved as pdf files for Adobe Reader if you're interested! Contact me and I'll send them to you!

DEFINITELY try 200 @f22 to start. The studio lights are SO different than the speedlight or any hotlights you may have used in the past. It's always a good starting point, and usually you won't need to stray far from it, if at all! Good luck! I can't wait to see some posts with your new lights!!
