Downloading to portable hard drives

Help! I'm the new owner of a Canon 10D and love shooting hi-res photos. This fills up the CF card really fast. Anyone have field experience downloading directly from the camera to a portable hard drive?

  Sylvia,

I have the same question. Taking a vacation soon and don't have a laptop and can't afford 20 1 gig cards. I have been trying to decide if I want to get an iPod color ($300) or a SmartDisk FotoChute ($150). Both hold 20 Gig. I think I like the simplicity of the FotoChute, but I also want an iPod. You should get from this post that I don't have either and have not gotten a great deal of feedback where I have asked this question in the past.

  Stuart,
So glad you responded. I think I'm going to go for the FotoChute or similar system by Argosy (also holds 20G) because of the simplicity. Where do you buy FotoChute? Have not seen around here (Minneapolis, MN)?

  Hello....

I have a 60 GIG portable hard drive that you can download your CF cards to while out in the field and then once back at a hotel or home, you can download the hard drive to your computer and CD/DVD.

I have used mine for over a year and I love it. I haven't had any problems with it and the power last a long time (I think the most I have done in one day on it is about 1200 images downloaded to it) and still had enough power to download the photos to my computer when I got back home that evening. It came also with a car charger. While its downloading one card, I am shooting with another card and once its done downloading the card, it turns off to save power.

However, I can't find anything with a model or name on it? I have the box in front of me and it just says Digital Data Box. I will keep looking.

Its small and comes in a little case that fits nicely in your camera bag.

I believe that I paid about $200- for this and the company was very nice as I needed fast shipping and located here in So. California.

Michele
