Composition and Clutter
I found this ant carrying an insect maybe three times his size, which slowed him down enough that I only had to crawl around for a few minutes chasing him before I could get a shot. Do you like the placement of the subject up in the left corner, or should I make the composition tighter and center the ant? Is his burden too distracting? Because it creates a dark backgound behind the ant's head the forward portion of his head seems kind of lost. What do you think? Thanks,

Kris, Guess you are crawling around on the ground. I like the perspective of this . . . from the ant's POV. The one distraction for me is the part of the unrelated plant in the upper right corner that is within the DOF. Yes, the head does disappear slightly in her burden, but it's not that bad. Just a personal opinion, but it looks as if you have a "picture within the picture." Try cropping out just the ant and her burden from the upper left and see what you have then. You might have to chop a little off of the lower right leg. Experiment a little with the cropping. -- John

I tried removing the lower right leg and everything below and to the right of it. But I think that leg, and it's contact with the blade of grass is too important to the picture to remove. In my refusal to dismember the subject I have left a little of the offending plant. What do you think about this?
