Starting a Business

Hello,

I live in Pennsylvania and I'm starting a photography business out of my home. It is nothing real elaborate for now, just portraits and location photography. I was wondering if anyone knows what steps I have to take to be "legal". I have a name for the business and I know I have to get a tax I.D., but do I have to get a state and Gov. tax I.D.? What kind of insurance will I need. Should I Copyright the Business name? If so, how? I have some small jobs lined up and I just want to make sure I take the proper steps to claim any money I make so I don't get slammed by the I.R.S. down the road. Any and all comments and input will be greatly appreciated.

Thank You,

Jeff

Also, how do I check to see if the Business name isn't allready being used?

Jeff

Jeff    Hello Jeff I too have opened my business. I have some of the same questions, but the answer to your second question is the city office that you register will run a quick scan to ensure nobody has already used the name. the question they will ask is do you want to open your business as DBA = Doing business as (your business name /Sole proprietor, or a corporation which requires an annual meeting and one employee. the employee can be you, and your annual vacation counts as your annual meeting. keep all receipts.. hope this helps.. I will keep an eye on your responses as well.

My best advice to you is to contact a CPA. He (or she) will know what needs to be done as far as getting business licenses, registering properly with the state and locality, filing the appropriate reports in a timely manner, etc.
