I have a digital NikonD70 with an 18-70mm lens and a quantaray 70-300mm lens. I would like to be able to set a specific zone for focusing. I understand the explanation given in a book I bought about the camera by Denis Curtain, but the lens that he uses to explain depth of field and zone focusing have fstops on them. My two lenses have only the focal distances and the length of the zoom listed on them?

For landscapes I have been using what the book refers to as the hyperfocal distance, but for closer in subjects and action photos, I would like to do this zone option. Is this possible on this camera? If not, is there another technique that I should be using?

For the two shots that I took of the dolphins one I hit it lucky and it came out fine. The other is very fuzzy. For both of these, I used the automatic action feature of the camera. I think I'ld have better shots if I used the manual options and could set a zone of focus.

Your lenses are probably G-series lenses without the aperture control ring. The aperture is set with controls on the camera instead. The Nikon 18-70, and I assume the Quantaray 70-300 as well, do have a focus distance scale. However, it is not practical to design these zooms with depth of field scales. So you have to consult a separate table or scale to set zone focusing or hyperfocal.

http://www.dofmaster.com/ is a good freeware source. It has programs for creating/printing depth of field scales, a hyperfocal chart, and a calculator for use in a PALM.
